Consumer optimism maintained on economic dynamics: BI

BI says the Current Economic Condition Index (CECI) recorded at 110.3.

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- The Consumer Survey performed by Bank Indonesia (BI) in January 2019 demonstrated how consumers remained upbeat (>100) on economic dynamics at the beginning of the new year despite retreating slightly on the previous period. The Consumer Confidence Index (CCI) moderately decreased from 127.0 in December 2018 to 125.5 in the reporting period, BI Executive Director for Communications Agusman noted in a statement here on Thursday.

Consumer confidence was boosted by consumer perception of current and future economic dynamics, with the Current Economic Condition Index (CECI) recorded at 110.3 and the Consumer Expectation Index (CEI) at 140.6. Nevertheless, consumers were less upbeat than in the previous period due to slower rising incomes and less confidence to purchase durable goods.

Furthermore, the respondents predicted slower income growth in the next six months.

The results of the Consumer Survey also showed that respondents predicted milder inflationary pressures in the next three months (April 2019) due to the adequate supply and smooth distribution of goods.

In addition, consumers also expected price pressures to subside in the next six months (July 2019) in line with maintained supply after Eid-ul-Fitr.
